About Xanax
Alprazolam, sold under the brand name Xanax, is a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety disorders and panic disorder. It is one of the most prescribed psychiatric medications in the United States. Alprazolam acts quickly (onset within 15-30 minutes) and provides short-term relief from anxiety symptoms. It is available in immediate-release and extended-release (Xanax XR) formulations. As a Schedule IV controlled substance, it carries significant potential for dependence and withdrawal, and is intended for short-term use. Long-term anxiety management should involve non-benzodiazepine treatments such as SSRIs and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
How It Works
Alprazolam enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. It binds to GABA-A receptors and increases the frequency of chloride channel opening, resulting in enhanced inhibitory signaling throughout the central nervous system. This produces anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), sedative, muscle-relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects.
